What is Aufguss?

Aufguss is a guided sauna ritual that brings a little something extra to the sauna experience.

Our Sauna Master pours water over the hot stones and adds ice balls infused with essential oils, filling the sauna with steam and scent. With flowing towel or fan movements, the Sauna Master gently sends waves of heat and scent through the room, accompanied by carefully chosen music.

Shared rituals typically include two rounds, while our private ritual has three. Each round lasts around 10–15 minutes, with breaks to enjoy the fresh air or take a refreshing dip in the fjord. Some rituals also include a body scrub.

No previous experience is needed. Just bring your swimwear and come as you are.

Shared Sauna - Evening Aufguss Ritual

Flåm location only. Available winter and summer.

Winter: 18:30–19:30 Monday–Saturday, 2nd November–31st March.
Summer: 21:30–22:30 daily, 1st June–31st August.

During the short winter days, the ritual takes place in pitch darkness, with crisp air and cold fjord temperatures outside. In summer, long evenings mean there’s still light over the fjord and mountains during the session. Two very different atmospheres, but the ritual remains the same: a chance to slow down, warm up and settle into the evening after a day of exploring or travelling.

The Evening Aufguss Ritual is a 60-minute guided sauna experience, limited to a maximum of eight guests. Led by our Sauna Master, the heat builds through two aufguss rounds using ice balls infused with essential oils, music and flowing towel movements that carry the heat and scent through the sauna.

Between rounds, step outside into the fresh air or take a dip in the Aurlandsfjord. Refreshing in summer, properly cold in winter!

Towels, seat pads and our natural body scrub are included. No prior sauna experience is needed.

  • The ritual begins promptly at 6:30PM (18:30) during winter and at 9:30 PM (21:30) during summer.

    Please arrive 10 minutes early to allow time to check in and get changed. As the experience begins together as one group, guests arriving late may unfortunately miss the opening part of the ritual.

    The full experience lasts 60 minutes, including time for changing before and after your sauna session.

Private Sauna - Aufguss Ritual

Flåm & Aurland. Available all year on request and on selected dates.

Enjoy 90 minutes in your own private floating sauna, with a guided Aufguss Ritual led by your personal Sauna Master.

Begin with an alcohol-free welcome drink before settling in for three guided aufguss rounds. Steam, essential oils, music and flowing towel or fan movements come together as your Sauna Master builds the heat and carries waves of warmth and scent through the sauna.

Between rounds, step outside for some fresh fjord air or cool off with a refreshing dip in the water.

After the ritual, the sauna is yours to enjoy at your own pace, with around 30 minutes to relax, take in the fjord views and enjoy the warmth.

An alcohol-free welcome drink, towels, seat pads and our natural body scrub are included. No previous sauna experience is needed.

  • Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. We recommend kids be at least 6. Please note:

    • The sauna floats, so there may be movement.

    • It’s surrounded by water—supervise kids near the edge.

    • There’s a hot stove inside, so keep an eye on children.

  • On request all year round. Some limited dates also available in our online booking system.

Frequently asked questions

  • Aufguss is a guided sauna ritual led by a Sauna Master. Water, essential oils, music and towel/fan movements are used to create waves of heat and scent throughout the sauna. Unlike a regular sauna session, the ritual follows a guided sequence with breaks between rounds.

  • Yes! No previous sauna or Aufguss experience is needed. Our Sauna Master guides you through the ritual, and you're always welcome to step outside for some fresh air whenever you need a break.

  • Shared rituals take place with other guests and typically include two guided rounds. A private ritual gives you and your group exclusive use of the sauna, with your own Sauna Master and three guided rounds. Both offer time to enjoy the sauna and cool off in the fjord.

  • Not at all! A dip in the fjord is entirely optional. You can also cool down outside in the fresh air between rounds.

  • Bring your swimwear and some drinking water. What's included varies between experiences, so check the details of your chosen ritual for information about towels, seat pads and body scrub.
